Choose the right pool enclosure - Guide

Things to consider when choosing a pool enclosure

In this guide, we'll go through what to consider when buying a pool enclosure. Here you'll find the answers to all your questions about pool enclosures and more.

Choose a pool enclosure based on function before design

Our recommendation is to choose a pool enclosure based on how you will use the pool, not on how you think your neighbor should see it. Generally, we recommend considering the following points when choosing a pool enclosure.

Choose the right size for your pool enclosure

When buying a pool enclosure, you must consider its size. It's generally said that the pool enclosure should be at least 25 cm wider than the pool and at least 50 cm longer.

Pool enclosure for a 4x8 meter pool

For a 4x8 meter pool, the pool enclosure should be at least 4.25 x 8.5 meters. Remember that the stated size is always the internal measurement.

Pool enclosure height

A higher pool enclosure is always preferable in Sweden due to weather and wind. However, there are some things that affect what height you can have. Most municipalities require a building permit for heights above 1 m, and some municipalities go as low as 60 cm. Always check with your municipality if a building permit is required before ordering your pool enclosure. Another aspect is that high pool enclosures can appear bulky and obstruct the view. A basic rule is that higher pool enclosures have a rounder shape so that snow cannot accumulate on them but slides off. This means that models with a radius handle snow loads better, while lower pool enclosures require maintenance during winter so that the amount of snow does not press down on the pool enclosure.

Pool enclosure height can lead to building permits

Depending on the height of a pool enclosure, it will be determined whether you need to apply for a building permit or not. Regulations vary in different municipalities, so be sure to check what applies in your specific municipality before purchasing a pool enclosure.

Insulation capacity

Pool enclosures are most often available in two options: cellular polycarbonate or clear polycarbonate. Cellular polycarbonate means there is an air gap in the polycarbonate material itself. The cellular polycarbonate we sell is 8 mm thick, and clear polycarbonate is 3 mm or 4 mm. Clear polycarbonate means it's a solid sheet of either unbreakable polycarbonate (PC) or SAN (acrylic). Polycarbonate is four times more expensive than SAN, but it is also unbreakable. It's the same material police use for their shields or found in the sides of an ice hockey rink. Cellular polycarbonate always insulates much better than clear polycarbonate, but the disadvantage is that you cannot see through the pool enclosure, which is why many often choose clear polycarbonate.

Heat loss with different materials:

  • Cellular polycarbonate 8mm – 3.2 W/m2K
  • Clear polycarbonate 4mm – 5.4 W/m2K

Clear polycarbonate releases approximately 69% more heat than cellular polycarbonate.

Safety

All our pool enclosure models are approved as safety covers and have lockable modules to keep unauthorized persons out. Pool enclosures ensure that children and pets are kept away from the pool when you are not present.

Safety is usually one reason to choose a pool enclosure, but there are other reasons to get one too. A pool enclosure protects the pool water from contaminants such as dirt, sand, stones, leaves, and not least rainwater, which changes the pool's pH value. A pool enclosure is also an economical alternative when covering the pool and using it for a longer period. You can expect to be able to swim in the pool from April to October in 28-30 degree water as pool enclosures have high insulation capabilities.
