Bypass for pool heat pump - What applies?

What is a bypass used for?

The filter pump's flow rate modulates the speed at which water passes through the heat pump. However, it is possible that this flow is too high for the heat pump. With a bypass, the water flow can be controlled at the level of each piece of equipment. This way, the heat pump receives precisely the amount of water it can optimally handle to better heat the pool.

A bypass is also useful if maintenance or intervention on the heat pump is necessary. In this case, the heat pump is isolated by closing the bypass valve, and the rest of the installation can continue to operate during the intervention.

Do I need a bypass for the pool?

A bypass is used to modulate the water flow between the filtration pump and the heat pump. As soon as the filtration pump's flow rate is 4 m3, it is recommended to install a bypass. Even the smallest filtration pump can have a flow of up to 4 m3/h.

What happens if I don't have a bypass?

A bypass is used to divert part of the water to the heat pump. It works with a valve opening and closing system. Thanks to this, we can precisely control the flow of water passing through the equipment. Without a bypass, the water flow can become too high.

Water passes too quickly through the heat pump

The water passes too quickly through the heat pump, and it does not have time to absorb all the heat calories before returning to the pool.

The heat pump does not heat optimally

The heat pump runs at full speed until the water reaches the set temperature. This risks forming frost. A bit like the frost that appears on the back of the refrigerator when it has been turned up too high.

The filtration unit does not work optimally, as the water passes too quickly through the filter media (sand, gravel, polymer filter, etc.).

How is a heat pump bypass installed?

A bypass is usually installed in series, meaning you connect - in this order.

  1. The filtration pump

  2. The filter

  3. The heat pump

  4. The electrolyzer (if present)

Connecting a bypass valve

The bypass is installed between the filtration and the heat pump. The bypass valve turns more or less to control the water flow. Remember, however, that water passing too quickly through the heat pump takes longer to heat up.
