Mexican XL "Carmen" Hammock: The 1000-year-old hammock!
The hammock, a prestigious object and hierarchical symbol in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and the northern Andes, spread throughout much of South America (Amazon basin, South American rainforests) and Central America (Mexico, Guatemala...) before the 15th century. By the time the first Western explorers reached the "New World", the hammock was widely used as a means of sleeping by all social classes. Cultural anecdote: The origin of the term "Gringo
Did you know? The term "gringo" originated during the occupation of Mexico by American troops in 1914. The soldiers were dressed in green, and the local population called them "green go". Even after the soldiers left, the expression stuck. It's common to hear people refer to you as a "chele", which is an inversion of the verlan word "leche" (milk), referring to the foreigner's light skin color. "Gringo" is generally considered more pejorative than "chele".
