Artfex dog crates, together with the harness, are crash-tested and approved by SP according to ECE-R17, which is a European standard for securing cargo in vehicles.
Why is a safety harness needed?
The crate is placed at the very back of the car, and in a collision, the forward force becomes enormous. The crate and dog are pushed forward with such force that the backrest of the rear seat can give way, causing the crate to be hurled forward with such force that the driver and passengers risk injury.
An even greater danger exists if the backrest of the rear seat is folded down, perhaps because bulky goods are being transported. In this situation, a strong brake application can be enough for the crate and dog to penetrate the car's driver compartment with devastating force.
This accident risk can be prevented if the crate is anchored with a crash-approved safety harness. The safety harness is designed to fit all Artfex dog crates; installation takes place in the car's original lashing points.
Included in the mounting kit are also two metal lashing eyes and two lashing eyes made of the same material as the safety harness. This is to allow for supplementation if these are missing in the car.
